Canary Craftivists

I first found out about 'craftivism' when watching a BBC Four documentary and instantly felt draw to it. Since writing my university disseration about the representation of plastic pollution and climate change I've wanted to get involved in activism, but always felt a little bit nervous about it. Craftivism allows for gentle and quiet protests - very much up my street!
So last week I created my first craftivism piece, a yellow canary for climate campaigning. This little canary will be sent to my local MP before the UN climate conference to show the need for faster and more drastic action in the fight against climate change.

A canary was chosen by this projects organisers because they are only able to fly high with clean air, something which is rapidly disappearing.
I made the canary by cutting scraps of material into feather like shapes and sewing every individual piece on, allowing me to take time to the think. The canary is filled with offcuts I can't use for other projects, trying to keep the little bird as eco-friendly as possible.
I'm really excited to take part in future craftivist projects!
